Flag Description
The flag of Cyprus was officially adopted on August 16, 1960.
After gaining independence from a century of British rule, Cyprus now hoists this symbolic flag. The island is a copper shade representative of its name, Cyprus - the Greek word for copper. The crossed green olive branches symbolize the hoped for peace between the Turks and the Greeks.

Larnaca Airport
Cyprus Airways
A private boat
All EU Citizens can enter Cyprus with their National ID cards. Other visitors need their passports. Many countries do not need a visa. Check with the nearest Cypriot consulate in your area.
By Air
The only ways to reach Cyprus, the time being, is by air or sea. Cyprus is served by two international airports. The main one is in Larnaca, and the other is near Paphos. Most international flights land and get off from Larnaca airport. Many charter flights are also operated, which provides direct connection to major cities in the world. Being a central country, most flight times could take about 2 to 3 hours from major European cities. As an example, a flight from Athens takes 100 minutes to Larnaca.
Unless you like cruises, and you do not like sea-sickness, it is better to travel by plane. Many internet sites now offer cheap offers and charter flights to Larnaca. Also many travel agents will provide special rates. However, as a rule of thumb, always book your flight early.
The current Larnaca airport consists of a single large Apron for all flights. It is somehow a basic airport, where passengers are transferred by bus from the gate to the plane and vice versa. However this will change in 2008 as a new airport is being built in order to serve the increasing demand.

By Sea
The other way to get to cyprus is by sea. Two major ports serve Cyprus. Limassol being the most important one., the other is in Larnaca. Most passenger and cargo traffic go to Limassol port. Cyprus acts as a hub for connection for routes going to Greece, Greek islands, Egypt and Israel. On the other hand, if you have a private or self operated vessel, Larnaca port is the answer. It is well maintained and is better setup for this type of vessels. The marina and port are situated on the eastern side of Larnaca town.
From Italy, Israel, Greece, Greek Islands or Egypt there are direct ferries to Cyprus. Online ferry ticketing is also available.
Wine Festival in Limassol
Traditional Wine Harvesting
Command Aria Wine - The Oldest Wine in CyprusWine
He discovered the vine yards, and got even more popular when he started the wine production. “Dionysus”?? Yes, Dionysus, the God of Wine. And one of the Dionysia (festivals) is the Lemassol Wine Festival named after the God of Wine (Dionysus).
What about wine, and what kinds of vine yards and grapes used in the making of the tasty Cypriot wine?
Command aria the sweet red wine has a history back since the 12th century. It is the oldest wine in the world and where it came from was Cyprus.
Wine has been formed in Cyprus, as a very well known fact, for over 4000 years till now. And it is said that farming of the vine in Cyprus is as historic as the roots of first people who landed in Cyprus.
Xynisteri (the White) and Mavro (the Red), are the traditional home grapes used in the production of the very fine Cypriot tasty wine. The Xynisteri is the grape used to make the fine White Wine. While the Xynisteri Grape is grown in large amounts on slopes at high elevations –from sea level up to 1500meters- it is known for its small acidic levels.
Mavro (black in Greek and Cypriot) the major red grape, is grown-up in larger quantities than the Xynisteri. In view of the fact that the major characteristics of the Mavro grapes are the soft color and the little acidic level, it is usually mixed together with other higher acidic and less pale colored grapes.
As a matter of fact, the soil and climate of Cyprus especially in the city of Lemassol (lemassos in Cypriot), the house of wine, played a vital role in the cultivation and growing up of fine grapes, and in 1987 Lemassol was declared “The City of Wine And Vine”. Besides, the environs of limassol and the hills of Cyprus, like Trodos Mountains, formed a very friendly atmosphere for the grapes to grow up in as if it was a gift of a natural world.
Moreover, every house in Limassol was a small wine producer since every family grew vines in their lands. And families by that time were conceited of their own hand made aging wine.
Beside that the Mavro Grape casing 73% of the total wine grape area and the Xynisteri covering 13%, other natures of grapes and wine are found in Cyprus which are the Malaga, Ophtalmo, Maratheftiko, Promara, Spourtico and Kanella. On the other hand there are new kinds of non-traditional Grapes that were lately introduced into Cyprus; among them are the Grenache, Mataro, and Palomilo not to mention the many more others.
The four big wineries now in Cyprus are: KEO, ETKO, SODAP and LOEL. Lately wineries were put up amidst vine yards in the vine villages and Trodos Mountains. 30’s of modern wineries were built there which helped better the wine quality. Around 50 wineries are found in Cyprus now.
Now what about if we have a short look at how wine is produced in Cyprus:
At present, there are 23, 500 hectares of vines. at the present time, there are around 50 wineries in Cyprus all of them good equipped to produce fine quality wine.
In the old times, Mountain and hill stony lands were to be cultivated by bare hands of grape growers. It was a really hard and exhausting job. Grapes were to be collected in large baskets, and carried on donkeys in long rides under the heat of the sun to the presses to remove the seeds and the clusters before the fermentation process. The Grapes would then lose juice, freshness, taste and quality during this time of being exposed to high temperatures of the Mediterranean sun. Lately, grapes are now being collected in smaller crates, carried by small vans to the modern equipped wineries.
Try not to Miss the Wine Festival in Limassol:
Wine Festival:
The wine festival was born in September, in its parent’s city, the City Of Wine, Lemassol.
As a major explanation of the festival, it could be that man worshiped the Gods, Aphrodite (the goddess of beauty and love) and Dionysus (the God of Wine), but also enjoyed himself!!! This was how man worshipped this God and Goddess, by drinking wine.
The first festival took place in 1961 and since then it became and yearly festival.
Guests as well as locals are present at the festival every year. The festival is carried at the Municipal Garden of Limassol (near the sea) in September of every year.
The Festival itself is well thought-out as an important cultural and traditional event. And apart from that, it’s a great occasion for Cypriots to promote their fine Cypriot wine and for poets, essayists and novelists to be enthused too by the festival warm inspiring atmosphere.
When going there, you have to pay an entrance fee at the gate, you will see the festival sign back from the 1961 days, and the new signs of the modern wineries like ETKO, KEO, LOEL, SODAP, and LAONA. All you can taste and drink of wine is free of charge, so you can taste as much as you like without paying anything. But when it comes to eating, low charged great dishes are available for the visitors. More than 10,000 visitor every year to the festival enjoying the night, with Greek music, comedy, fun, happy ambiance, traditional dances and local plays.
Did you know that in Cyprus there is a wine museum?
Wine museum:
Go to 42 Paphu Street, in Erimi village (at the crossroads of wine routs of Cyprus) in Limassol and you will find it there. November,2004 the Wine Museum was established in a 150year old traditional building.
A sightsee in the museum will surely amaze you and give you a extensive idea about wine in the ancient days. The museum is a must visit.
A collected works of art-crafts, old jars used for wine in the ancient days. However, you will notice also a great collection of photos picturing the ripe, harvest and production of wine back in the old times. As well as many other magnificent ancient wine art.
Old papers and instruments show you the aged ways of wine manufacture and how it was stocked up alongside the historic snapshots with new audiovisual tools to help you comprehend the history of ancient traditional Cypriot Wine production.
Places you should stopover to enjoy the great panoramas of vine yards and wine production facilities:
Limassol vine yards where the four large wineries are established, they offer wine tasting in their shops; trodos mountains road is a great place of sightseeing; more wineries in Koilani and Mandria Moreover, give Paphos mainly the north side a visit as well as the white village of Omodos.
You will never forget what you saw!

The results of early negotiations between Greek and Turkish politicians led to a broad agreement in principle for reunification as a bi-cameral, bi-zonal federation with territory allocated to the Greek and Turkish communities within a united island. However, agreement was never reached on the finer details, and negotiations were often deadlocked over the following points, among others:
The Greek side:
The Turkish side:
The continued difficulties in finding a settlement presented a potential obstacle to Cypriot entry to the European Union, for which the government had applied in 1997. UN-sponsored talks between the Greek and Turkish leaders, Glafkos Klerides and Rauf Denktash, continued intensively in 2002, but without resolution. In December 2002, the EU formally invited Cyprus to join in 2004, insisting that EU membership would apply to the whole island and hoping that it would provide a significant enticement for reunification resulting from the outcome of ongoing talks. However, weeks before the UN deadline, Klerides was defeated in presidential elections by centre candidate Tassos Papadopoulos. Papadopoulos had a reputation as a hard-liner on reunification and based his stance on international law and human rights. By mid-March, the UN declared that the talks had failed.
A United Nations plan sponsored by Secretary-General Kofi Annan was announced on 31 March 2004, based on what progress had been made during the talks in Switzerland and fleshed out by the UN, was put for the first time to civilians on both sides in separate referenda on 24 April 2004. The Greek side overwhelmingly rejected the Annan Plan, and the Turkish side voted in favour. In considering the outcome it is interesting to note that whilst the Turkish settlers (who make up the majority in the occupied north) were allowed to vote, the refugees who had fled Cyprus had no right to vote in a referendum which would ultimately determine their future (their right to return and right to their property).
In May 2004, Cyprus entered the EU, although in practice membership only applies to the southern part of the island which is in the control of the Republic of Cyprus, but this reality does not concern the personal rights of native Turkish Cypriots as EU citizens, as they are considered as citizens of the Member State Republic of Cyprus.
In March 2007, Greek Cypriots demolished part of the wall along the boundary that for decades has split Europe’s last divided capital. The demolished wall had cut across Ledra Street, which runs through the heart of the city’s tourist area and is seen as the strongest symbol of the island’s 32-year partition. In the wall’s position, the Cypriot government erected a temporary barrier and demanded that Turkish troops be removed prior to opening the passage. The Turkish Cypriot side refused.

While they are not traditional recipe in Cyprus, crepes is very famous throughout the island. They are French Cuisine Classic, made of a thin pancake look alike, filled with your choice of nutrient, folded like a triangle and served warm. Fill it with ham and cheese, or just cheese. If you want to have it as a dessert , order it with chocolate (they use Nuttela chocolate most of the times), or nuts. Ice cream and Jam are other famous ingredients that Krepa can be filled with. Choose from the very wide variety of fillers and enjoy you crepes. I myself always take it –Aspri Mavri ke Baskota- which means (white/black chocolate with biscuits). I find it the best. I usually eat it at “Palace De Crepa” in Nicosia. By the way an average price for crepes is 2.6 Cypriot Pounds. Check Currency Page for Currency Exchange Calculator. It is easy to find a place that sells crepes; by the way it is called “KREPA” in Cypriot. However, there is a bit of difference in tastes among the cuisines that sells the KREPA, and basically it differs in the thin of the krepa, and for most people and me the thin the Krepa the better it tastes. The basic ingredients of a Krepa : |
|
| Egg
Salt Flour Milk Butter And aside from that, you can choose your own taste of fillers: |
![]() |
| Dessert Krepa:
Jam Ice Cream Chocolate Black/White (my favorite) Biscuits And many more of a wide variety you can choose from… Normal Krepa: Ham Cheese Other meat fillings… |

Having stayed for more than 3 months in a cottage in Protaras back in late 1990’s, I have learned a lot. I did not want to spend all my money on take away’ s or taverns, thus decided to cook at home. My neighbors were nice local people, and the grandmother of my landlady was a very good at preparing meals. Every few days I used to see her in the garden, and she would invite me in to eat with them. She also used to tell me how she made the meal. So as not to forget, I used to write everything, and cook it again at home
Yesterday I found one of these papers that had one recipe. I am presenting it here. I will search between my belongings and papers in the coming days. And as I find the rest, I will put them here.
There is nothing better than and ORIGINAL RECIPE, from an old local grandmother.
