Buses Privately owned companies
operate buses between local cities. Intercity buses operate the green
lines which connect local cities together. However
in 2006, the government announced plans, backed with EU, to build a
more sophisticated network of local public transportation.
On daily basis,
except Sundays, buses run from Larnaca to Nicosia, Limassol, Ayia Napa, Protaras and Paphos
and vice versa.
There are
summer
timetables and
winter ones. Normally the buses operate between 6:00 a.m. till
5:00 p.m. So if you arrive earlier, or at night, you should arrange
your own transportation, either by a taxi or rent a car. Iff arrive
by air or by sea, you can reach most cities by bus.
Almost all the villages are connected with the
more near city with the local buses. The operation of buses is limited
a time or two times the day. The regional enterprises of buses provide
more ways. In the main cities the buses function often at the duration
of day and in certain regions of tourists, at the duration of
summertime, their timetables are extended up to the midnight.
Busing is
relatively cheap and efficient - you can actually go from one side of
the island to the other for about £3 (around 7 USD.)
Taxis
Although
public
transport in Cyprus is limited to privately run bus services except
Nicosia, there exist taxis, and 'Shared' taxi services (known as service taxis).Taxis
are another efficient way to get around, although it should be noted
that night-time tariffs are more expensive than day tariffs. Taxi
service in Cyprus is operated by calling "Taxi Service" and ordering a
Taxi. It is not permitted to stop a taxi and take it! Between cities 2
or more people can share a single taxi and travel.
Rent a Car / Scooter
If you are going to Larnaca or
Nicosia it is better to rent a car. Usually most of the roads are well
built and safe, and they all bear signs, however it could get somehow
tricky near the beaches or mountains. So do not forget to ask
for map with the car. Your hotel could also provide one for free.
In all major cities and resorts,
and in some villages, there are many companies who provide cars and
scooters for rental. Both economy and luxury cars are available.
Economy packages start at 8 pounds. Insurance is an extra of 3.5-5
pounds depending on the type of car and company. However some
companies do provide full packages including insurance. Cabriolets are
a bad choice, unless you want your head to burn under the sun, or
sweat at 40 degrees Celsius if choose to close the roof. From what I
experienced in Cyprus, renting a small economy car with A/C is much
better, and more economic, price and gas, than to rent a luxury car.
Unless you want to spend over 100 USD a day on your car, that is
something different.
Motorways
A1 Nicosia to Limassol
A2 connects A1 near Pera Chorio
with A3 by Larnaca
A3 Larnaca to Agia Napa
A5 connects A1 near Kofinou with
A3 by Larnaca
A6 Pafos to Limassol

Staying in smaller cities like
Agia Napa, Protoras or Paphos, we recommend that you rent a motorbike
or scooter to zoom around.
